If you wish to measure the design quality of UML modules, SDMetrics can help you spot and fix any design flaws early in your project. Besides analyzing UML structures, the software can detect incorrect or incomplete items, find style problems and much more. As a direct result, you will be able to increase your design's efficiency and quality and reduce development costs.

The software is based on Java, which makes it compatible with Mac OS X, Windows and Linux platforms. Moreover, its files can be extracted from a 7.75 MB archive, without going through an installation process. Although SDMetrics is not free, a fully functional trial version is available, for evaluation purposes, which does not come with any restricted functions or nag screens.

SDMetrics provides a tabbed interface, which should not present any challenges for anyone who works in the field of software engineering. If you wish to load an XMI file, you have to select it on a separate window, on which you can make a series of configurations, like selecting a project files set, an override XMI transformation file, setting up filters and more. After selecting an XMI file, you must hit the Calculate button, on the program's toolbar, to start processing the file's data.

The metric data is displayed in a huge table of contents, but it can be filtered, to show only class, interface or package elements. Additionally, you can sort the data by numerous criteria and highlight values with certain characteristics. Histograms are displayed separately, for various operations, on a different tab. While viewing the histograms, you may click a button, on the same tab, to generate a full definitions catalog, on a new tab.

The software displays the loaded data in a Kiviat diagram as well. If you select certain elements, in a tree structure, on the left side of the window, their corresponding areas will be highlighted in the diagram. The program's rule checker can detect various issues, like redundant or inconsistent elements, violations of naming conventions and more.

Pros

SDMetrics can analyze UML modules and it can detect various issues automatically. It places numerous filters and sorting criteria at your disposal, making it easier to browse through the data. Its interface is well organized and the available functions are straightforward and easy to understand.

Cons

There are no serious drawbacks to mention. When it comes to verifying and optimizing UML modules, SDMetrics can help you increase your efficiency and cut development costs significantly.
